Growing up as a military child, reading never came easily to me. Teacher after teacher pushed books I couldn’t connect with and punished me with poor grades when I failed to complete them. Even when I tried, my mind tended to wander; I could read the words but never retain the meaning. Each failed test only deepened the gap between me and the teachers urging me to read.

The only real motivation came through threats—losing sports or class leadership roles I cared deeply about. Sports and Associated Student Body (ASB) were my passion, my identity, and my world. I watched and played every game imaginable, believing for years that loving sports meant I couldn’t be good at reading. Everyone in my family thrived in athletics as a kid we lived at the gym playing sports, and I thought that left little room for books.

Everything changed in ninth grade when I met a teacher who finally understood what I needed. The problem wasn’t reading—it was the material. Once I was given books about athletes and sports stories, reading stopped feeling like a chore and started feeling like discovery.

Ever since, I’ve made it my mission to help young people find that same spark. I believe every child can become a reader if given stories that speak to their passions. For me, that passion was sports, and that’s where I continue to focus my efforts—creating books and resources that show young athletes that loving sports and loving reading can go hand in hand.

Kaleo holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He is currently pursuing both a Ph.D. and a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
